This mosaic is comprised of an assortment of agate stones that I collected with the help of family and friends around the Kamloops area. The idea of an eagle came to mind to be symbolic of my Metis heritage for the “Deep Roots (Hidden Spaces)” exhibition at the Chazou Gallery that I took part in.
I captured the eagle’s photo at our local wildlife park which served as the reference for a digital painting. I then created this mosaic using an experimental mosaic rendering technique and was able to create the image above as a guide. Unlike my previous mosaics, every agate had a different size and shape. Taking the skills learned from assembling Einstein, I was able to use a pouring method of spreading the epoxy over the carefully arranged agates lying on parchment paper. After several coats of epoxy, and many hours of drying later, I was able to peel the eagle from the parchment paper. It was then cut for better shape, sanded and hung by wire so as to be back-lit for optimal view.
