Mona’s Eyes in Slate

monas-eyes-in-slate

With this rendering of Mona Lisa’s eyes, I was trying to use as few slate tiles as I could to get a recognizable image. The end result used only 270 tiles, picked from many thousands, which gives an almost painterly effect to the piece.

I spent a considerable amount of time tweaking the eyes, sometimes shaving down the slate to reveal a darker/lighter layer underneath to show more detail. It measures 8.5″ x 28″.

It is somewhat eerie to have all of the artwork depicting eyes hanging in my house. I feel as if  someone is always watching me. At least there are no eyes in the bathroom… yet.
